This week I got two orders. One for a centerpiece for a 75th wedding anniversary. "Something simple, purple and it needs to have '75' on it" I mused on this and would have liked to have made a large 3D diamond. By large I mean something like 10 inches tall. But, I am not a designer and I couldn't find a template I could make work for something that large so I gave up on that idea. But, I liked the diamond being a part of the piece.
I ended up finding this cute little vase in the Silhouette Store. By Lori Whitlock item # 123188 it is called Paper Straw Flower with Vase. I didn't need the flower just the vase and this was perfect because it had a lid that I could put a pick through that I would put the diamond on. All I had to do was resize the hole in the center of the lid to 1/8" so the bamboo skewer I was using for a pick would fit perfectly into the hole. I have to say here that if you haven't tried any of Lori Whitlock's 3D designs you need to check them out. She makes them so precise that assemble is a breeze. Everything fits absolutely perfect every time.
Enough talk, let me show you the picture.
It is really simple. And I designed the diamond template myself. I may not be able to do complicated 3D but I can do simple cut files! Just saying. BWG
Here is the materials list:
- Elegant Eggplant, Whisper White card stock
- Perfect Plum polka dot designer paper
- 10" bamboo skewer
- Silver printable foil from Silhouette
- 5/8" white satin ribbon
Let me share a close up of the diamond.
For the diamond I made the outline and section markers black then I made the insets for the accent pieces which show gray in this picture. Once I had the design I created a print and cut so that it cut out the outline only and then attached the printable foil in the appropriate places. The printable foil is perfect for this because it is sticky backed so it's just peel and stick to get the finished look.
It really does look sharp. I made two that would attach back to back with the bamboo skewer in between.
For the bow I wanted a fuller bow that would sit on top of the box and I would have just bought something if I could have found the size I wanted. I didn't want too large of a bow, only 3", and I wanted the skewer to go through the center. After playing around for a bit I came up with an idea that worked beautifully.
I used 5/8" white satin ribbon and used my japanese screw punch to punch a hole every three inches along a piece of ribbon 30" long and one hole about 3/4" from each end. After attaching the diamond piece to the blunt end of the skewer I wove the ribbon back and forth sliding the ribbon over the pointed end of the skewer. It worked perfectly. Now that the bow was on the skewer I cut the pointed end off so that there was 4.5" that would slip through the hole in the lid and rest in the bottom of the vase.
To keep the skewer from sliding around inside the vase and to give the vase some weight so it would stand up more securely I glued a large nut inside the vase and the skewer fit into the hole in the center of the nut. It worked great.
So, there you have it. Another project completed.
