So Succulents & Wheelbarrows

I've been busy making some wheelbarrows for centerpieces for my next Soroptimist meeting. I decided to make them bright colors and cover them with DSP (designer series paper) The 3D file is from A Little Hut #27914. I thought to myself that if women made wheelbarrows this is what they would look like. Bright colors and beautiful designs.

Of course wheelbarrows can't be left empty so I decided to fill them up with some succulents. It just so happens that Stampin' Up! has a die set Succulent Framelits and I've been watching others post their creations using them so I decided to give it a try. Now I like these dies as much as anybody and if I'm making one or two that's not so bad but I made 8 wheelbarrows and I wanted at least three succulents in each one. So, I cut one of each of the dies in the set out of black, scanned them, opened them in Silhouette Studio Business Edition, traced them and saved them into my library. Once that was done I was able to pick how ever many of each size I needed to make the succulents.

I looked around on the internet and picked up ideas from several different places and put them together to create my own.

First of all I wanted to figure out how many of each piece I would need to make the succulents. So I laid out all the pieces and named them. Large, Medium, Small, A, B,C. See the pic below.

Using these titles I then found a site that suggested which pieces to use. I changed them up a bit but here is a breakdown of what I used. Starting with the top row being the large succulent, the middle row the medium succulent and the bottom row the small succulent.

Large: 2 Large, 1 Medium, 2 small, 1 A, 1 B, 1 C

Medium: 1 Medium, 2 Small, 1 A, 1 B, 1C

Small: 3 Small, 1A, 1B, 1C

I cut enough pieces to make two sets of each color Old Olive with Rich Razzleberry accent, Old Olive with Always Artichoke accent, Mint Macaron with Rich Razzleberry accent and Elegant Eggplant with White Craft accent.

Using a sponge dauber ink the tips of each piece and lightly brush some color from the center out then fold each petal up at its base and used a bone folder to curl all but the two smallest pieces down, the last two pieces I curled up. Be careful you don't pull the petals off!

Whenever there were two pieces the same size I nipped the second one between each petal just an eighth of an inch so that the center would be smaller and fit inside the previous piece better.

For the smallest succulent there are 3 small pieces so the first one I left just as it was, the second one I nipped between the petals an eighth of an inch and for the third one I cut to the center between two petals, overlapped the petal from one side of the cut over the petal on the other side effectively making it a 7 petal piece.

To build the succulents place glue on the bottom center of each piece and layer them alternating the petals as you do.

I think they are all quite lovely and they look really cool in the wheelbarrows with a little bit of floral moss I got from the Dollar Store.

Creative Circle - Great Occasions Blog Hop

Welcome to the Creative Circle Great Occasions Blog Hop where our team is showcasing sets from the Occasions and Sale-a-Bration catalogs. By now all of you have at least a few stamps and dies and maybe a couple of other items too and we just want to show you some of the things you can do with all that wonderful "stuff" and if you don't have what we share then maybe you'll consider ordering it from one of us :)

Last month I shared a Valentine screen that I made using shapes from the Silhouette Store. It was a lot of fun and it reminded me of a project I saw a long time ago. It was a card made very similar to the screen but I didn't have to have my Cameo to make it. (Although, I could still use it....BWG)

I call this a card because it will fold up and fit inside a standard A2 envelope although it might require extra postage if you were going to mail it because it gets a little bulky.

Here is my Special Reason You're So Beautiful card:

How To:

Cut the base accordian fold card 5.5 x 11
Place the base on the Simply Scored scoring tool landscape orientation and use the stylus to score at 2.75, 5.5, 8.25.
Center the Decorative label punch in the center of each section and punch out just half of the label to make the legs
Use the Heart Border punch to put the heart border across the top edge -save the hearts that get punched out to use later as embellishments.
Cut four pieces Pink Pirouette 2 5/8 x 4 1/8 these are the mats for the art pieces
Cut four pieces Whisper White 2.5 x 4 these are the art pieces
Stamp the dancing lady from the Beautiful You stamp set using Basic Black ink onto one of the white pieces and on the DSP
Cut out the dress and the hat, run them through the Xyron sticker maker and attach to the image stamped on the white cardstock
Stamp and cut several flowers and leaves with the various inks and papers. I just cut a bunch laid them out and started building.

When I started embellishing the four panels I put some temporary tape on my work surface and attached them to it so they all lined up then when they were separated the designs would match up from panel to panel. The picture below shows the art pieces almost completed. I used my exacto knife to cut the embellishments that overlapped each of the seams then attached each section to the mat and the mat to the card base.

Once everything was attached to the card base I attached a few hearts that I saved from the border and the card was done.

One thing I need to share, I used the 5" Xyron sticker maker for all the flowers,leaves and dress. Once it is run through the Xyron I run my stylus around all the outside and inside edges so that there isn't any sticky where I don't want it. It takes a little time but it's worth the effort and it makes placing the embellishments so much easier than trying to glue those fine cut lines.

Now, like I said, you don't have to have a Cameo to make this card. Buuuut.... I used it to make my base. Below is a screen shot of how I laid it out. I used the grid marks to put the score lines in the right place. I saved it because I might want to make this card again and I won't have to figure it all out or try to remember the measurements. And you all know that I scan in all of my punch, framelits, thinlits into my Silhouette Cameo library so I can use them there, right? I also scan in stamped images and create cut outs for them with the trace tool which makes for less fussy cutting when I want to layer. There are a few cases where that doesn't work but most of the time it does. Doing this multiplies what I can do with my investment in Stampin' Up! supplies.

Now that I have a card I want to make a gift box to go along with it and what better bundle to use than the Window Box Thinlits and the Window Shopping stamp set.

I used the same materials that I did for the card with two additional items. I used the Cupcake Cutout Framelits and the Window Shopping stamp set to make the banner you'll see on the lid.

I used a combination of the Silhouette Cameo, Die set and table top cutter to cut out all the pieces. I have all the pieces scanned into my Silhouette Cameo so I cut out the box pieces, the flowers, and leaves using the Cameo. I cut some leaves and flowers from white and then I stamped them after they were cut. It's really easy to do and if you're particular about lining them up just use the Stamp a ma Jig. The offset DSP mat and the white art pieces used on the top and inside the lid I resized and cut with my Cameo. See how combining the Cameo and Stampin' Up! exponentially increases what you can create?!

To save some scrolling time I have made the pictures a bit smaller but if you click on them you can see them full size.

The pieces I prepared to make the box.

The stamped and attached embellishment pieces. I lined up the art pieces and attached them to my work surface with temporary tape so they wouldn't move while I was working with them.

Once it was completed I used an Xacto knife to cut the seams where images overlapped.

The art pieces for the sides of the box are all cut and ready to be used.

The outside of the box with the art pieces attached. Lay out the box pieces this way so that all the art pieces are right side up when the box is assembled.

The inside of the box. This is how it will look, I didn't attach the DSP pieces yet. I will do that after assembly so the tabs will be covered by the DSP for a nice clean look inside. I did attached the mat and art piece on the lid.

Once the inside and outside are embellished it was time to put it together.

Start by attaching the bottom and top pieces together.

Once the box was assembled I used Snail to attach the DSP panels and bottom to the inside of the box.

Lastly, I added the DSP mat, a white art piece, some embellishments and a banner to the outside of the lid.

This was fun to make. It took some time but for the special someone it is worth it. Valentine Screen Table Top Decoration

As soon as Christmas was over, Valentines started popping up all around and it really started putting me in the mood. I love putting out decorations around my home for the various seasons and Valentines is another favorite of mine. I've shared this in the past but I just made another one. I am donating a prize to my Soroptimist club to use. They give a prize away each month to encourage members to read the newsletter. Anyway, it was such a fun project and it looks so nice I just had to share again. This time I will include pictures and explanations of how I changed up the image to make it work.

I used the 2 Windows design by Alaa'K from the Silhouette store item# 8541.

As you see it comes with two window styles. I deleted the one on the right and kept the one on the left. That one I un-grouped and removed the window panes from the center then added a simple rectangle 2.5 x 3.75. The trick to getting it perfectly centered? Well, I used the shift key and selected each of the four rectangular slots above and below the rectangle I was adding and grouped them. Then I selected that "group" and the added rectangle, went to the "align" tool and selected "center" and it lined it up perfectly.

This is the basic shape. Now I needed to add legs and a side tab so that I could connect them together to make a screen. First, I selected all the shapes EXCEPT the outline and grouped them together. I left the outline separate because I will use the "point edit" tool with this to create the legs and side tabs.

The next thing I did was create a duplicate of the image and set it aside. I always do this when designing just in case something goes wrong and I need to go back to the beginning.

Now that I have a working image I turned on the point edit tool. It is a little hard to see in the image but what I did was add two edit points right next to each other on either side 1/2" in from the edge. That is where the arrows are pointing.

Then I selected each of the edit points and with the arrow keys formed the legs. I also moved the edge of each leg in .25" from the frame edge again using the edit points. The legs are .5" wide and you can turn the grid lines on to get the measurement right. I don't leave them on because they make viewing difficult so I use them and then turn them off. Once I had the legs made I duplicated the image because you will need one screen that does not have a side tab and three that do.

So, using the same process as I did for the legs I created a side tab

Once the side tab was created I created a straight score line so the tab would fold nicely. Group it all together and save. There you have the two basic shapes needed to make the screen. Cut three with tabs and one without.

The vellum I just cut with my table top cutter to 3.25 x 5 and glued them to the back of the screen sections.

Next I chose some designs to place on each of the screens. I honestly don't remember all of the ones I used but there are dozens of shapes you can choose from in the Silhouette Store. These I cut from the Silhouette brand Printable Silver Foil. It has a sticky back so it makes applying the shapes really simple and I love the shiny look.

Here are some close ups of each panel: For the sake of space I have made these images small but you can see them full size by simply clicking on them.

Now on to assembly:

Here are all the pieces for making the basic screen:

First you want to attach the vellum to each section. I use Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue and it works great. Just a thin bead down each side and across the top and bottom and between the rectangle slots.

Then place the vellum on and press down. Set aside to dry.

Once the vellum has had a few minutes to dry bend each side tab on the score marks. Add glue to the "front side" of the tab then with the next section front side facing you lay it on the tab lining up the legs and the design so it will all be straight.

Do the same with the remaining sections until all four sections are connected.

Fold the screens accordian style so it will stand up

Now you're ready to embellish each panel with whatever designs you choose. Here is a pic of the designs I used to give you some ideas. Remember, with the Cameo you aren't limited by the size of an image because you can resize to fit. I just chose designs I liked opened them and brought them into the screen design so I could size them to fit.

Creative Circle - Love Is In The Air Blog Hop

Whoever said that Valentines always have to be red, white and pink? Not me! Don't get me wrong those really do work but so do other color combinations.

For instance, how about Dapper Denim, Mint Macaroon and Copper foil sound to you?! Combine those with Paisleys and Hearts and you've got a winning combination. Don't turn your nose up just yet! Wait and see how it all comes together with the hot air balloon design provided by our ever talented Liz Holloway. Liz has the file available on her site AND she is going live with a FB business site on January 7th so check out this link for that.

Happy New Year Centerpieces

I know that New Year's Day has come and gone and we are already moving into our new year but my club meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month which will be the 10th and I still wanted to welcome in the new year with something cool for the centerpieces.

I used the New Years Eve kit from SVGCuts to make a champagne bottle and I found a champagne glass in the Silhouette store item 72169 by Snapdragon Snippets. The glass was a little tricky but not overly difficult to put together. I lined the glass with acetate and that is tricky to adhere. I used 1/8" scorpal tape and it worked but it isn't ideal. To be honest I'm not sure what to use to adhere acetate really well. If you have suggestions let me know by leaving a comment.

For the placemat I just created a 10" circle in the Silhouette Software. Then I cut a sample of the Starblast Edglits, scanned it, opened the scanned image in the program, traced it, and saved it. From there I can use it, manipulate it, resize it etc. I LOVE what I can do when I combine my Silhouette with Stampin' Up!

Let me show you step by step how I brought the Starblast image into the Silhouette to use. If you have the die you know it is designed to be a pop up image so to scan it I cut the background away first so I could get a clear view of the overall image. ( images can be seen full size by clicking on them)

Then I used the Trace tool and selected the image and traced it using the "trace entire image" option because I wanted all the inside and outside areas traced not just the outline.

Once it's traced simply pull away the image and your outline remains as a cut line. Next, I "cleaned" it up a bit. By that I mean I used the Edit Points tool and straightened up the bottom edge, un-grouped and removed any extra pieces the scanner may have picked up that didn't belong then I regrouped.

I made the image a compound path and added color to it just so it would be easier to see what I did. Now, at this point this image would just cut out completely as there is an outline that will cut all the way around the image. That's fun and I'll save that in my library but I want to use it the way it was designed, as a pop up image.

To do that I simply used the knife tool and cut away the base. The arrows point to where I placed the knife cuts.

Once the cuts have been made I "ungrouped" pulled away the unwanted portion which I will delete and regrouped the remaining portion. Now I have an image I can insert into my circle and it will be a pop up image.

Back to the circle, I created a 10" circle and placed three of the Starblast images on the mat and cut it out.

Now the finished project... drum roll please.....

The champagne bottle top is hinged so it opens up and inside is lined with foil vellum. When a tea light is placed inside the circles light up and it looks like bubbles in the bottle. Way cool!

I created a little video so you could see the display in action, as it turns on the turntable.

Dodecahedron

What a word! I had to look up how to say it and describe it for you.

dodecahedron noun do·deca·he·dron \(ˌ)dō-ˌde-kə-ˈhē-drən\ a geometric shape having 12 sides.

I was browsing around on the internet and came across a site called "A Piece of Rainbow". This really cool site posts do it yourself craft projects among other things and often produce free templates as well. I found the Dodecahedron 2017 Calendar project and downloaded it.

They created a file that could be used in the Silhouette so I started with their file and made the calendar.

It is really cool. It measures approximately 5" in diameter.

Well, that was fun but I am never content to leave something alone so I decided this would make a really cool picture cube for my grandsons to have. There were a couple of tweeks I had to do to the file to make it more user friendly too.

The basic shape was great but there were no score lines that the Silhouette would make so I ungrouped the image, deleted the calendars so the sides would be blank. Then I took one of the polygons traced it, and then used that to create score lines on the images. This took some time but it was worth it to me to have it done this way and then I saved that to my library for future use. Once the design was re-worked I enlarged it to fit a 12 x 12 piece of card stock so there would be larger sides for the photos.

Here are the layouts:

Instructions for assembly are on the A Piece of Rainbow website just click on the link I added earlier. I marked the last two pieces that would be glued A and B since the calendar isn't there to use as the viewpoint. A and B are the last two sides you will glue, otherwise assembly will be nearly impossible. It is tricky anyway but just takes some patience and it comes together beautifully.

Here are some pictures of my assembly: I've made them small to keep this blog from going on forever but you can enlarge them simply by clicking on the image.

I used discontinued textured Coordinates card stock from Stampin' Up! to make this and it is sturdy enough. Cutting this out on 12 x 12 I was able to size it to 11.004 x 11.520 which makes the finished size approximately 7" diameter. Now it was just a matter of finding, printing and attaching the photos.

This is easier than you think. See the screen shot below. I traced one of the polygon shapes. Then with Business Edition software you can open your pictures files and drag and drop your picture into the shape and it fills it to fit automatically.

I used the registration marks feature so I could cut the pictures out on the Cameo and I printed on photo paper so the images would be a higher quality.

And there you have it. It would be fun to add pictures of your garden, or special occasion or whatever. It's fun to turn it around and see what is on each side.

The new Occasions Catalog and the Sale-a-Bration catalog go live on January 3rd and I am very excited to share with you one of my favorite bundles. You will find it on page 43 of the Occasions catalog the Window Shopping Bundle which includes the Window Shopping stamp set and the Window Box Thinlits die set. I like this bundle for several reasons. One I just LOVE the little box and there are so many variations of things you can do with it and so many ways you can use the dies for different applications.

Let me show you a little about the set and once you see some of the possibilities you will be adding it to your wish list!

I made several boxes but I'll start with this one.

To make the box you cut out two of the box die shapes. One will become the top the other the bottom. In this image the top is the one on the left and the bottom the one on the right. On the bottom piece you will cut off the left and right tabs on the score lines. I'm sorry my image is a little blurry but one thing to note is that any design you place on the bottom section needs to be placed so that when you put it together it will be right side up The easiest way to make sure this happens is to lay out your pieces as I have in the picture and then place any design all facing the same direction.

Here is a better picture of the side panel layers I attached. I cut the pieces 1 3/4" square and they fit perfectly.

To imitate the DSP on the side panels I used the discontinued mask and a sponge dauber with real red ink and added the design to the lid portion. Then I punched out hearts and used the largest of the punched shapes to add the hearts similar to how they looked on the DSP.

One thing I have found is that the box die works great with the following sandwich in your Big Shot. Standard platform, thin die adapter, cutting plate, paper, die, cutting plate. I didn't use the precision plate I found it left unwanted marks on the cutout and I think it was hard on the die. Also, make sure your cutting mats are flat, if you use one that is seriously bowed it could break your die.

Here are some variations on box tops using dies included with the set. For each of these I cut DSP and put it on the inside of the lid so the design would show through.

Layering Squares Boxes

I saw the cutest little boxes on Facebook and they were made using the Layering Squares Framelits from Stampin' Up!. I cased them but the original creator was Jeanette Cobb and she has a on how to make them. Check it out, it's really well done and be sure to let Jeanette know how much you like her idea.

I made some similar to hers with tops made with Stampin' Up's gold foil card stock and then I used my Silhouette image 3D Poinsettia Flower resized to fit the box. I gave the flower 1 Old Olive layer and three graduating sizes of Real Red, inked the edges with Cherry Cobbler ink using a sponge dauber and attached them with a glue dot to the lid. They looked beautiful.

Sorry, forgot to get a picture with the poinsettia.

Don't fear though, I made more. this time Using Marina Mist card stock for the box bottoms and Silver Foil for the box tops. I also used the Snowburst embossing folder, (sorry it's discontinued). The Elegant Dots folder actually works better and is just as pretty. Then I added a white shimmery snowflake to the top cut out with my Silhouette Cameo.

A couple of hints.

The snow burst folder was almost too intricate. The foil can crack and break and several of my lids did when I used this folder. It also made using the score lines very difficult and I had to re-score them after they were embossed. This did not happen when I used the Elegant Dots folder. So, if you choose to emboss your lid pieces keep the emboss design a little more simple and open and you'll have less trouble.
Also, Jeanette uses the double sided tear tape from Stampin' Up! to assemble her boxes. I've used this and Scor pal as well as the supposedly super tacky red tape on 3D items and eventually it always pulled away and did not stay together. If you don't want your creation to fall apart when you give it away I suggest using glue. My favorite glue is Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue. I have had lots of experience with this glue and it works GREAT.

Here is a picture of the snowflake boxes I made. Of course you can change the color scheme and embellishments to fit just about any occasion. Each box holds a single Ferrero Roche candy or those Lindt Truffles from Costco will fit too.

Creative Circle - Home For The Holidays Blog Hop

Welcome back to another Creative Circle blog hop! This month's project suggestion was super easy peasy! We were challenged to make anything holiday themed. It could be cards, home decor, ANYTHING! EEEK! I thought it was going to be easy but with so many choices to make it is really hard to choose.

My favorite thing to do with my Silhouette Cameo and Stampin' Up! products is make home decor and 3D projects so that is what I did. I have really been into making tea light lanterns and have many I have made from designs in the Sihouette store and from places like SVGcuts and Dreaming Tree but I decided it was time to make my own designs.

There is a beautiful sea shell lantern in the Sihouette Store that I made for a gal for her bridal shower. It was so pretty and the way I put it together made it super easy so I decided to use the general idea to create my own Christmas scene lanterns.

Isn't it lovely? I thought so too. I did make a couple of changes however.

I cut the image just as it was so it fit an 8.5 x 11 piece of whisper white cardstock in landscape format.

I then took the image and ran it through my Xyron sticker maker to make the entire image sticky backed. Once it was through the sticker maker I run my stylus around all the edges inside and out which makes it come up cleaner without leaving sticky where the openings are.

I then peeled it off and attached the entire image to a piece of Vellum card stock also from Stampin' Up!.

With the attached image facing up I ran the vellum over the edge of my work table to give it some curve. Then I attached a strip of double sided tape to one end and attached it to the other end to make a tube.

Set it up and put a multicolored tea light under and you've got a beautiful lantern.

So, used the basic concept for my designs and made some Christmas lanterns.

Here we go - this months Creative Circle projects complete with videos!

First up the Nativity Lantern. ( all images can be seen full size simply by clicking on the image - I just made them smaller to make this post less lengthy.)

After cutting the images out with the Silhouette Cameo and running them through the Xyron sticker maker I attached the images to the vellum card stock and ran it over the edge of my work table to help it curl.

Once the "curl" was there I used 3/8" Scorpal tape down one end

Then just attach the ends to make a tube and the lantern is complete! Isn't that super simple?!

Yet, it makes a truly lovely lantern to add to a display or to just stand alone.

I like Santa too so here is one with Santa flying over a village.

I promised you a video so I made a video of each of the lanterns. You'll like this, I found a good price on rotating display stands that can be battery powered or plugged in. They have two speeds and an on/off switch. The tops are clear plastic that lifts off so that lights can be placed inside to give lighting from the base. For my use here I just put the lantern on top with a multi colored tea light inside.

Tea Light Village

My husband had a special request this season. We just finished making a beautiful wall piece with a mirror and shelf from an antique bed that we no longer used. We wanted to preserve the wonderful carving but the bed just didn't work for us any longer. Anyway, with the cute shelf my husband wanted a tea light village made.

He specifically wanted the houses to be different colors so I adapted the Tea LIght Village designs by Marji Roy of Ashbee Designs to fit our theme. The designs can be found in the Sihouette Store. Marji has made many different renditions of houses, trees and accessories. This year she added a Gazebo too.

I cut all of these from Stampin' UP! materials which work so well with the Cameo. I embossed some of the roofs with the Fancy Fan embossing folder, the barn roof I just used the Score board to make stripes like a metal roof. I also added vellum on all the windows so the tea light would be more diffused.

A little bit of "snow" and some lights for at night and viola' a lovely little village.
