What do you do when there is a storm outside? Make something on your Cameo of course! I received an email from Split Coast Stampers with a tutorial on how to make a Tea Light Snow Man and a cute little gift box to put it in. You can check out the details on how Becky Roberts made hers using Stampin' Up! tools and accessories.
I plan on making several of these for little gifts over the holidays so I turned to my Silhouette Cameo and using the measurments and basic design information created all the pieces so they could be cut out.
In case you would like to try your hand at making your own templates to cut out for projects like this I'll show you how I did it.
First up the box bottom. Overall outside dimensions 5.5 x 6.5 and then scored at 1.75 inches all the way around. I placed a rectangle on the desktop and sized it to 6.5 wide by 5.5 tall. Then I created a second rectangle 3 wide by 2 tall which is the dimension you get when you subtract 1.75 from all sides and I changed the line to perf lines. (all pictures can be seen full size just by clicking on them)
Next, I use the knife tool and cut the top line and bottom line loose from the left and right side lines.
Doing this I was then able to extend the two horizontal perf lines out to the edges of the rectangle using the scale tool to make them both 6.5" long
I wanted the flaps to be tapered so they would fit nicely inside when glued so I used the line tool and created two lines 1.75" long. Remember this is the width of the gap from the center to the outside edge of the rectangle. I angled one line with the points touching at the bottom creating a small V. I then placed the V even with the vertical perf line. This V is a cut line. To get the same exact V for all four corners I just mirrored it to the right, to the bottom and to the left and put each one in its place.
To taper the outside corners of the flaps I selected the outside rectangle and used the edit points tool. I added an edit point at each of the four ends of the horizontal perf lines. Then, selecting the corner edit point I moved the corner in 5 clicks using the arrow tool. I did this on all four corners.
You can see the flaps have been tapered all around
I followed the same process for the lid that I did for the box bottom. Using the measurements provided in the tutorial. The outside dimensions of the lid are 4.125 x 3.125. When scored at .5" the inside rectangle would be 3.125" c 2.125". and then cut and extend the two horizontal perf lines, taper the flaps. For the window in the box top the Decorative Label punch was used. Because I am a Cameo owner all my punch shapes are in my library so I just brought it in and used the alignment tool to center it on the lid.
The DSP pieces for the box, the acetate for the lid window and the white circle for the snowman face were totally straight forward. The DSP pieces are 1.5" x 1.875 and 1.5" x 2.75". The Acetate piece is 1.875" x 2.875". The circle for the snow man is 1.5" and I put a .375" circle in the center for the tea light to poke through.
Lastly is the hat. It took a little messing around to get this but this is how I did it. I created an oval 1.25" x 2.5" from the Layering Oval Framelits that I scanned in to my Cameo and colored it red, duplicated it and colored it green and duplicated it one more time and colored it white. I then used the knife tool and cut the red oval where I wanted the size of the hat to be. Then I layered that red piece over the green one and used that as a guide
I turned the white oval 90 degrees and set it over the other pieces about where I wanted to create the hat band.
After moving the red hat piece out of the way I selected this group of pieces and used the modify tool and the divide option which separated all the pieces
Once they were separated I was able to remove the four outside pieces keeping just the center. This I narrowed to .5" tall and you can see it lines up nicely with the hat piece.
Lastly I made a .5" circle for the pom pom
These are all the pieces needed to make the snowman tealight and box.
Embellishments are up to you.
I used the Candy Cane Lane washi tape around the edge of the tealight and the edge of the box lid. The DSP on the box is Candy Cane Lane. The scarf is made using the silver ribbon from the 3/8 Glitter Ribbon Combo Pack. The red portion of the hat is embossed with the Cable Knit embossing folder. The white portions of the hat are cut from glimmer paper. The eyes and mouth are the small and medium pearls colored black with a permanent marker.
I hope you enjoyed learning how I made this cute little combo using my Cameo. I purchase the Stampin' Up! dies used, cut them and scan them into my software so that I can use them to build things like this. I cannot share those files with anyone but if you own a Cameo you can do the same thing. It doesn't replace my Stampin' Up! dies and punches it just adds to what I can do with them.
