Dreaming Tree 3DSVGcuts came out with this Skimmer Hat Box a while ago and I've been going to make it and finally did. I just used papers I had around for the most part so this first one is pretty basic but there are limitless possibilities. I will be making at least 5 more and I plan to use different colors, themes etc. When I get the rest made I'll make another post and share them with all of you.
This was fairly simple to make but I did a few things differently than they did in their video tutorial and I'll share those with you as I go along.
First off the materials I used:
- 6 - 12x12 Whisper White card stock for the Lid 1, Bottom Circle 1, Bottom Circle 2, Bottom Liner, Main 1 and Main 2
- 4 - 8.5 x 11 Whisper White card stock for the Box 1, Box 2, Lid 2 and Lid 3
- 2 - 12 x 12 Designer Series Paper I used the new Floral Boutique from Stampin' Up! for the Hat Panel 1 and Hat Panel 2
- 1 - 12x12 Designer Series Paper I used the DCMW Ocean Breeze paper stack
- scraps of Night of Navy and Slate Gray for the anchor item # 1425 by Silhouette and ships wheel #80203 by Sweet Afton The anchor is cut 2" x 2.75" and the ships wheel 2.051" x 2.065"
Their menu lists needing different amounts but I found that I could make it with less than what the menu stated. Of course I didn't make the flowers so I didn't need those pieces either.
One tip I have is when you cut out the "hat panel 1" from patterned paper if you use double sided paper save the thin ring.
The outer ring will go on the flat brim of the hat. The small inner circle goes on top of the hat lid and leaves that thin line around the edge. I turned over the thin ring and put it on around the small circle and it added a little bit of an accent.
I will warn you the hat base is a little tricky to get the final circle piece attached. There is no way to get to the tabs to adhere them to the last cover piece. So, when you fold the tabs over leave them angled up just a bit and put the glue on the tabs not on the circular piece so that when you place the circle on them they are drawn to the surface and you'll have a better chance of getting them to stick. I hope that makes sense, it's impossible to make a picture of it.
This hat is large, 11" across and 4" high overall. The box portion is 5.5" across and 3" deep so it will hold a fairly large gift.
I'm looking forward to making some more of these. They will make great centerpieces. I think I will make a wedge shaped box so that it tilts up when placed on the table something like you see in the picture here.
If you make one I'd love to hear from you and see what you did with this cute project.
